For many people, choosing an attorney starts with one question: can this person actually handle what I need? My legal practice is built around estate planning, estate administration, and related closely held business matters—not a broad, general practice. I am a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate, which allows me to provide a very high level of service to clients within a broad range of estate planning and estate administration situations.

For those keeping track of ACC rivalries, I have feet in two camps. I completed my undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University in 1992 (graduating magna cum laude and joining Phi Beta Kappa). From there, I headed over to Duke University School of Law, where I earned my J.D. with high honors and membership in the Order of the Coif in 1995.

A Personal Approach to Legal Work & life outside the office

Community & Life Beyond the Practice

My approach to work is shaped just as much by life outside the office as it is by my years of legal experience. Though I am originally from the Lake Norman region of North Carolina, I settled in the Durham – Chapel Hill area in 1992 with my wife Anne. We later relocated north of Hillsborough in the country where we raised our three children Sara Beth and twins Ryan and Melissa , enjoying a quieter pace where the stars are a little brighter.

My unique approach to the legal business has afforded me invaluable time with my family—especially sports—both as a coach and as an involved parent. These experiences have helped shape the way I work with and advise clients, with a focus on what matters most to families over the long term.

I also try to make time for growing vegetables, cooking and fishing. Of course my life would not be complete without BBQ, wine, an occasional day on the golf course and a nice fire on the porch.
